The World’s Most Powerful Macro Photography – Explained

Views:4478|Rating:4.77|View Time:8:34Minutes|Likes:210|Dislikes:10
A big thanks to all current and future patrons who are helping fund this science and filmmaking outreach via Patreon:

Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram:

This week we went to the Forest Entomology Lab at the University of Florida to take a peak into the world of EXTREME MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY! And while these researchers are taking the macro shots of these insects to the extreme, this technique is actually something that anyone can try for less than 50 dollars. While we may show a beginner setup in the future, this was a really fun setup to talk about and showcase. I hope you enjoy seeing this technique. I know we had fun working with them to show it!

Remember, we do these each week as an outreach to help other filmmakers and photographers learn these techniques. They’re usually a side project to our main films.

In particular, special thanks to our Patreon supporters: Tobias Haase, Medesthai,, Huw James, Larry Nelson, Please Stand By, James Brady, Morgan Price, Jinyuan Yeong, George Logue, Chasing the Son Mobile Media, Johanna van de Woestijne, and all the others that help fund our work.

See Through the Lens of the World’s Best Underwater Surf Photographer | Ben Thouard in “Surface”

Views:245806|Rating:4.97|View Time:7:8Minutes|Likes:9697|Dislikes:52
SURFACE, a ROAM Original, is the story of how award-winning photographer Ben Thouard invented a new perspective of our world—shot underwater from inside a wave looking back at the landscape as never seen before. His love of the ocean, surfing, and windsurfing brought him to the small village of Teahupoo, Tahiti, where he can see the legendary surf break from his backyard. From the crystal clear waters of French Polynesia, his creative vision and desire to do something original took hold. After 15 years of trial and error, failure and success, he persevered to discover his own signature photographic style, as seen in his stunning new book, SURFACE. He hopes this new vision of our oceans, in their most pristine form, will inspire others to protect them. “Through this work, I hope people can realize that we need to take care of our garbage and recycle all of the plastic,” says Ben.

The World’s Greatest Photography Course – Language-Free Photography Lessons By Michael The Maven

Views:318|Rating:5.00|View Time:41:37Minutes|Likes:41|Dislikes:0
About a year ago I asked myself the questions; “If I were to die soon, what would have been the greatest photography course I could ever make to leave behind for generations to come & why would it be “great”?”

I came to the conclusion, that it would be highly impactful to create a photography course that anyone in the world could watch and learn the basics of photography in under an hour.

The tricky part, was getting around the language barriers, but I realized that if the lessons were physics & demonstration based, it might be possible. Numbers & the metric system are almost universal, so I allowed myself that exception, as well as using sounds, and other universal symbols.

When I taught in college, something I learned was that students retained information far better, when there was an aspect of self-discovery. I wanted this self-discovery aspect in each lesson.

One year later, this is my very best attempt to create a Universal Photography Course. Whether it is the World’s Greatest Photography Course or not remains to be seen, but in this format, I believe I have come very close, if not succeeded. I have no problems updating it either, so it will get better. If you think I did well, I would love a thumbs up!

Wherever you may be, whatever language you may speak. It is my true privilege and honor to be your mentor. I don’t have any plans on dying anytime soon, so until then….

Enjoy!

Dji Osmo Pocket | The Worlds Smallest GIMBAL | Best Travel 4k Video Camera

Dji Osmo Pocket | The Worlds Smallest GIMBAL | Best Travel 4k Video Camera Ever
#dji #osmopocket The DJI Osmo Pocket puts video stabilization in the palm of your hand, with a small camera that smooths out your footage thanks to a 3-axis gimbal. It’s pocketable, like the name suggests, and doesn’t hog your smartphone, like the larger DJI Osmo Mobile 2. We’re still testing out the 4K video smoothing and photo snapping capabilities, but it’s promising for video enthusiasts who don’t want professional-sized camera stabilization equipment. The on-board audio and price (along with the assortment of tempting accessories that add up) may be the only tough sells here. DJI is best known for its drones, but its experience with flying machines has helped it build some awesome gimbals too. Case in point: The company today announced the Osmo Pocket, a tiny gimbal camera that can fit in your pants pocket. The device is only four inches tall, but features a stabilized camera, a 1-inch touchscreen, and a whole bevy of smart features. The 12 megapixel, 1/2.3-inch sensor is the same one found in the Mavic Pro and Mavic Air, so if you’ve seen footage from any of those drones, you should have a rough idea of what to expect. It can capture 4K video at 60 FPS and last 140 minutes on a charge. The sensor isn’t any bigger than your typical smartphone camera, but where DJI differentiates itself is in its hardware and software features. The hardware stabilization on the Osmo Pocket is far superior to the digital and optical stabilization in smartphones, something particularly useful for scenes with a lot of camera movement and low light shooting. The gimbal is also able to smoothly track a subject as you move around, or you can use motorized presets to create smooth cinematic motion. And though the 80-degree lens isn’t particularly wide, you can capture seamless wide-angle panoramas by stitching 9 frames arranged like a tic-tac-toe board. Unfortunately, the 1-inch touchscreen isn’t exactly ideal for monitoring your footage, but DJI has a neat trick up its sleeve: You can attach your smartphone to use as a giant viewfinder. The device even comes with interchangeable USB-C and Lightning connectors so both sides of the mobile crowd are covered. The Osmo Pocket will retail for $349; it’s available for pre-order today and will ship in December. We’ve Just Invented the World’s Fastest Camera

How Do You Test the World’s Fastest Jet Engines? –

Read More:
Single-shot real-time femtosecond imaging of temporal focusing

“Thus far, established ultrafast imaging techniques either struggle to reach the desired exposure time or require repeatable measurements. We have developed single-shot 10-trillion-frame-per-second compressed ultrafast photography (T-CUP), which passively captures dynamic events with 100-fs frame intervals in a single camera exposure. The synergy between compressed sensing and the Radon transformation empowers T-CUP to significantly reduce the number of projections needed for reconstructing a high-quality three-dimensional spatiotemporal datacube.”

World’s fastest camera freezes time at 10 trillion frames per second

““We knew that by using only a femtosecond streak camera, the image quality would be limited,” says Professor Lihong Wang, the Bren Professor of Medial Engineering and Electrical Engineering at Caltech and the Director of Caltech Optical Imaging Laboratory (COIL).. “So to improve this, we added another camera that acquires a static image. Combined with the image acquired by the femtosecond streak camera, we can use what is called a Radon transformation to obtain high-quality images while recording ten trillion frames per second.”

Image Projections and the Radon Transform

“To be able to study different reconstruction techniques, we first needed to write a (MATLAB) program that took projections of a known image. Having the original image along with the projections gives us some idea of how well our algorithm performs. The projection code is pretty simple. Basically, we take the image (which is just a matrix of intensities in MATLAB), rotate it, and sum up the intensities. In MATLAB this is easily accomplished with the ‘imrotate’ and ‘sum’ commands.
