This video started as a simple concept and turned into something really awesome. Mat Weddle is one of the worship leaders at Sun Valley community church, and he is also an exceptionally talented musician that goes by the band name Obadiah Parker. So the idea was to have him write several songs with the same hook that would introduce each week of the a new series on Joseph Sun Valley would be launching.
Mat often performs at various venues in Phoenix, and had the idea to talk with the owners of a local wine bar if we could capture the video in their venue. They said yes, and we couldn’t be more grateful to have had such an amazing location to work with! Not only that, but the song/s Mat came up with were absolutely brilliant.
Special thanks to Mike Ward at Sun Valley CC for his help capturing and mastering the audio and Kazimierz World Wine Bar for allowing us to use their location for the shoot.

Song composition and performance: Mat Weddle (Obadiah Parker)

On June 13, 2011, Marine Sergeant Kevin B. Baldruf funeral was held at Woodmont Hills Church in Nashville, Tennessee. Kevin died on May 12, 2011 at the age of 27 while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan. He leaves behind a wife, Amy, and two daughters, ages 3 and 5. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Marine Sgt Kevin Balduf

His funeral gained nationwide media attention when the deranged Westboro Baptist Church announced plans to disrupt the funeral with one of their anti-gay protest. Big mistake!

Within days of a very well organized social media campaign led by musician Kevin Montgomery, thousands of strangers, all patriots and supporters, came out to shield Kevin’s family and friends from these protesters.

Nashville MMA Bus, Regina, with son, Tim Clay and Payge McMahon

In conjunction with the Clay family and owners of Nashville MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), we came out to support the supporters and document their efforts. Nashville MMA handed out ice water and donated their air conditioned tour bus giving supporters a cool place to rest from the 90F heat. The MMA training facilities manager, Tim Clay, coordinated the efforts with the blessing of his brother, and primary owner of Nashville MMA, Ed Clay. A close family, their parents came on board immediately. Regina and Tim Clay Sr., actually met while both serving in the Army, she as a nurse and he as an ambulance driver. They married 7 weeks after meeting and will celebrate their 39th anniversary this year.

Army Vietnam Vet & Biker Sid “Skip” Spencer

We met some amazing people and a LOT of bikers. According to Army Vietnam Vet and biker, Sid “Skip” Spencer, a 1,000 motorcyclist from different groups and chapters were in attendance including; The Outlaws, Bikers for Christ, New Attitudes, Keltics, Rough Riders, US Military MC, Leathernecks, Vietnam Vets, Blue Knights and Tribe of Judah.

When asked if anyone had anything to say to Kevin’s family, Rough Neck biker Terry Corn summed up the common theme:”We appreciate your son’s ultimate sacrifice and so deeply sorry for your loss. It is an honor to be here and we support you.”

For Biker Gloria Reece, who is also battling MS, this was the 2nd day braving the heat in her ongoing support of Kevin’s family. She along with 150 other motorcyclist went to Smyrna Airfield on Saturday and escorted the casket to the Nashville funeral home.

In the end, only three Westboro Baptist protesters arrived. Due to permits and ordinances, they had to remain 500 feet away from the church property. They weren’t there long though.

Red Dog | Documentary Official Teaser

LD’s current documentary project. Full release in fall 2017.

I spent my toddler years living in a strip club. During the 1970’s oil boom, The Red Dog was the rowdiest and most popular topless bar in Oklahoma City. Every miscreant, outcast and lost soul found themselves inside the Dog at some point back then. For a five year stretch it was the only home and family my mom and I had. She was a teenaged runaway, dope-addicted single mother, stripping with a fake I.D., and I grew up amidst the drug deals, stabbings, backroom blowjobs and never-ending party. Now some 30 years later, I’m light years away, and I’ve got my own family, making my own living as a songwriter in Nashville. I want to go back and talk to some of these people I thought of as uncles and aunts, cousins and dads, and see who made it out and who never did. At least get someone to corroborate my mom’s insane stories.

Tips Appreciated:
Check out our other videos:
David Bazan was, for many years, the songwriter and driving force behind the acclaimed indie band Pedro the Lion. After a decade helming the project, he found himself embroiled in a major personal philosophical and spiritual cataclysm, wrapped in a growing drinking problem. Bazan got to work exorcizing both his demons and angels, ditching the Pedro moniker in favor of his given name. His latest album is titled Strange Negotiations.

About The Film
“Jesus, Don’t Let Me Die Before I’ve Had Sex” is a documentary examining the idealism and silence embedded in the sexual teachings of evangelical churches. Through the stories of gay, straight, celibate, and sexually active churchgoers we explore the hopes, fears, and prayers of real people as they learn to reconcile their faith and sexualities.
