Clip of the Month: Extreme Poverty & the U.S. Government with Philip Alston

Philip Alston is the special rapporteur for extreme poverty and human rights for the United Nations. Recently, he spent two weeks traveling across the U.S. to investigate poverty and discovered appalling conditions, from homelessness in California’s richest cities to open sewage in rural Alabama backyards.

In this clip, he talks about his visit to a San Francisco church that provides a haven for the homeless—one of only two churches in the area to do so—and goes on to discuss the role of government. Today’s policies are the reverse of the New Deal, he says, which assumed that government had a responsibility to look after those at the bottom as well as those at the top.

Central and eastern China experienced one of the most intense winters so far; Beijing had to endure one of the coldest Decembers on record, and heavy rains and landslides hit the Southwest, leaving 4 dead.

After the most extensive snow cover on record for the US in November, storm Diego blanketed the Southeast leaving 400,000 without power, while unusually intense snowfalls hit the Southwest, and parts of the Northeast and West.

South Korea had bitterly cold temperatures so early in the season, while heavy snowfalls hit Japan, delivering 80 inches in the district of Yamagata.

Snow also disrupted normal life in Bosnia, Romania and Bulgaria, forcing schools to close and causing power outages. Meanwhile, Austria got 55 inches of snow in just 7 days… And winter has just started!

A “swarm” of meteor fireballs streaked across the skies of Spain during the last couple of months, 3 of them made their passage in just 5 hours in December. Mexico, Texas and San Francisco also had their share of spectacular fireballs this month.

Saudi Arabia continues to be battered by hail, heavy rain and floods that have triggered greening of the desert in some parts. While flash floods displaced 45,000 people in Indonesia, and Sri Lanka was inundated by 14 inches of rainfall in one night.

Unseasonable tornadoes wreaked havoc in Florida, Washington and Illinois, while a twister in Java, Indonesia, destroyed 156 houses.

A strong eruption of the Krakatoa volcano caused a tsunami in Indonesia leaving 430 dead and 22,000 displaced, and another volcanic eruption in Vanuatu triggered a series of earthquakes that cracked open parts of the island of Ambrym.

Venezuela was also hit by earthshaking events, a 5.6 magnitude quake hit the region of Carabobo opening fissures in the ground and buildings.

tornado killed at least three people when it hit northeastern Alabama early Wednesday shortly after midnight, authorities said.

The three who died were all in a mobile home in the northeastern Alabama community of Rosalie, Jackson County Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen told the Associated Press early Wednesday. Another person in the home was critically injured, Harnen said.

In Idler in DeKalb County, four other people were also critically injured after a 24-hour daycare center was flattened, local officials also said.Up to 20 buildings, including a Baptist church and a shopping plaza, were destroyed in Roslie, Harnen said.

As of 4 a.m. ET, Alabama Power reported that 3,500 customers were suffering outages.

Possible tornadoes were reported across several counties in northern Alabama and southern Tennessee.
Tornadoes and hail were also reported Tuesday in Louisiana and Mississippi. In Mississippi, the National Weather Service in Jackson said late Tuesday that it had counted six confirmed tornadoes so far in the areas of the state it monitors.

Tuesday evening a storm that hit Colbert County in the extreme northwest of the state, heavily damaged a home in Tuscumbia, trapping the residents inside, AL.com reported. Two people were injured, the report added.
Before the storms reached Alabama, numerous reports of tornadoes occurred in Mississippi earlier Tuesday evening. So far, no injuries have been reported in the Magnolia State from this round of severe weather.
According to the National Weather Service, a likely tornado in Noxubee County, Mississippi, trapped people inside a camp house on Ebenezer Church Road on Tuesday. Four homes were reportedly destroyed along that road.

A tornado described as “large and extremely dangerous” was reported near Mashulaville Tuesday.

In Grenada, Mississippi, three homes on McSwine Road were damaged by thunderstorm winds.

Thunderstorms produced large hail and prompted tornado warnings across parts of Mississippi on Tuesday. Some trees and power lines were downed.

In Jackson, Mississippi, a fallen tree blocked two lanes of a road on Tuesday morning, MSNewsNow.com reported.

There were also reports of baseball- and golf ball-sized hail hitting the central and north parts of the Magnolia State on Tuesday.
