I Photograph landscapes, bears, fox, elk, tourists, a snowman, and even visit old faithful! Wildlife seemed scarce this trip but I still managed to have a great time and make some nice photos.

Sorry for the lack of updates the last few weeks, I’ve been busy running a few workshops, getting images sorted for clients and competitions!
Today I’m back and I wanted to do a long term review of the D850 with my thoughts on the camera for use as a wildlife photographer. Having had the camera for a year now and being able to test it out in all kinds of conditions from snow to humid jungles, I wanted to give some thoughts on why I truly think this could be one of the best cameras for creative wildlife photography.
It’s been around a while, but still holds it own against everything that has been released in 2018, a world class 45MP sensor, brilliant AF, ergonomics and performance it’s a true workhorse camera, and one that I can wholeheartedly recommend. I know I’ll be using mine for many years to come!

If you interested in purchasing the Nikon D850
There was an increase in megapixels from 36 to 45.7 that’s nearly 26% more pixels. I didn’t think it was going to be a big deal however I have noticed a difference, large prints look amazing, plus I have the benefits of cropping in if I need to.
The downside is the files are bigger. The Sensor is also a Back-side illuminated sensor which means it has better low light performance. I think the biggest improvement though is in the quality of the files shot at higher ISOs particularly helpful for astro-photography.
The back screen now tilts, it makes it much more comfortable to work with behind the camera and it’s a far better experience when taking shots with the camera a low to the ground. While it tilts up and down, it would be nice if it tilted to the side like the X-T3. The resolution has been increased from 1Mill to 2.4 Mill dots. This is significant as I use the screen a lot for composing and focusing my images. The information displayed is easier to reader and the image is vivid and brighter to see. In low light scenarios when with the D800 the image on the screen would have a lot of noise. It’s now much cleaner with less noise and more detail.
Nikon have brought over the improved focusing system of the D500. The camera Autofocuses better when it’s dark, a situation. The speed and accuracy of the auto focus in low light situations is phenomenal. The Focus Shifting function is a clever feature. I can set it up and it’ll work out where to focus and shoots the images automatically.
It would be nice if the screen tilted to the side, but if it was a fully articulating screen that would be more flexibility in the ways it could be used. Snapbridge is still not an easy or enjoyable experience, so I tend to just avoid using it. They could improve Focus Shifting (stacking) to allow you to bracket your exposures as well. The addition of illuminated buttons it great for astro photography but they only light up on the left.
